Three Gymnastics Disciplines are approved for 2024 Paris Olympic Games

Every Olympiad, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) selects the disciplines for the upcoming games. For the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the IOC has chosen the four classic gymnastics disciplines of the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) to be among the 2024 Olympic sports. They include those we’ve all grown to love: the eight Men’s Artistic Gymnastics events, the six Women’s Artistic Gymnastics events, two Rhythmic Gymnastics events the two Trampoline Gymnastics events (Men’s Individual and Women’s Individual).

The IOC recognizes that these popular gymnastics disciplines help meet their primary objective that the 10,500 athlete participants across the Olympic Games balance male and female participation. The only change from the Tokyo Games is that the quota of places will be a few less, from 324 places to 318.

For the 2024 Games, the FIG proposed the inclusion of Synchronized Trampoline, as well as the remaining three gymnastics disciplines: Acrobatic Gymnastics, Aerobic Gymnastics and Parkour. However, due to quota restrictions, those disciplines and events will have to wait another day.

Nonetheless, the FIG was able to convince the IOC to try something new. Unique to the 2024 Games, there will be demonstrations of Parkour around the city of Paris, where parkour began, as part of a youth focused, non-competition program.

In this unusual year, the postponed 2020 Tokyo Games are on schedule to take place this summer, in 2021, a one year delay due to the coronavirus pandemic. Teams are still being selected, but soon we will see the best gymnasts in the World compete in our favorite Olympic sports.
